## Vulnerable sector checks: how they actually work

A vulnerable sector check is an enhanced police record check that also
searches for pardoned sexual offence records. It is required for positions of
trust or authority over children, seniors or people with disabilities.

Fingerprints are **not** always required. Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver
police each state that prints are needed only when the applicant's gender and
date of birth match an existing pardoned sexual offence record, or the search
is otherwise inconclusive. Claims that a vulnerable sector check "requires
fingerprinting" are wrong for most applicants.

Rules vary by police service, not by province. Fees, waiting times and
eligibility differ service to service, and many services publish no
processing time at all.
